Sullivan County Historical Society's Museum
LAPORTE, PA
The Sullivan County Historical Society's museum was begun in 1932 and by 1956 was housed in the nucleus of a small square brick building used to house the countys courthouse records while the old courthouse was being torn down for a new one in 1893-94. In 1988 an addition was built onto the nucleus and then in 1995 the Society acquired the Baldwin House property across the street from the museum. This property was originally purchased by the Fancher family in 1850. The Fanchers were the first of six families to settle in Laporte (which eventually became the countys seat), and that property is still in tact. In 2003, a barn was constructed on the Baldwin property to house artifacts and then in 2006 a shed was also added. These locations contain displays of farming, mining, lumbering, sports and one wing holds the contents of the Sulick Butcher Shop from Lopez that includes the wainscoting walls and ceilings.
