Nature, Culture, and Shopping

This trip through the Pennsylvania Wilds will take you to three of our most charming small towns, where specialty boutiques, Victorian architecture, museums, and restaurants await. In between, there's plenty of excellent shopping and, of course, a visit to our most popular natural attraction---the spectacular Pine Creek Gorge. So fuel up the car and head out for three days of fun!

  • Day One
  • Day Two
  • Day Three

Lock Haven

Millbrook Playhouse

The pretty town of Lock Haven got its name from its working past; the locks of the Pennsylvania Canal defined the town for lumber rafters during the 1800s. The Water Street Historic District is a treasure trove of beautiful homes and churches from the nineteenth century, so take a stroll and get a feel for the town's past. You can also check out the 2.25-mile Clinger Riverwalk along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. The paved walking path follows the river from Lock Haven University to the Piper Memorial Airport. If you're in the mood for a show, see what's happening at the Millbrook Playhouse---it offers summer stock productions in a restored 1800s barn theatre. Or if you'd rather catch a flick, head to the Roxy Movie Theatre, a restored art deco theatre built in the 1920s. Don't miss the gorgeous murals!

Lock Haven to Williamsport

Lock Haven's a great place to shop; the easily walkable downtown is full of places to explore, especially along Main Street. Pick up a few bargains, then head to the Piper Aviation Museum. It's the historic birthplace of the Piper Cub, the first popular private plane, and many planes are on display here. You can even test your skills on the fight simulator! Next up is a trip to the Woolrich Original Company Store. This is the place to buy wool sweaters, outdoor gear, and rugged classics that'll last a lifetime. Once you're all shopped out, get back in the car and head for Williamsport, home of Little League baseball and the fabulous houses of Millionaires' Row. The lumber barons of the 1800s built these palaces, and they are simply amazing. Enjoy your stroll back in time!

Williamsport to Wellsboro

Today you'll drive to the Victorian town of Wellsboro, near the Pine Creek Gorge located at Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks This breathtaking natural formation is also known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, and one look will prove that the nickname is warranted. Take some time, take some photos, and take a walk through the lush forests surrounding the gorge. Once you've had your fill, explore the town of Wellsboro and beyond---Route 6 is lined with attractions in both directions, from glass shops to chocolatiers to country gift stores. We hope you left enough room in the trunk for all the goodies you're sure to pick up!
